BOOK REVIEW: Once a Wallflower, At Last His Love (Scandalous Season #6) by Christi Caldwell

SYNOPSIS

Responsible, practical Miss Hermione Rogers, has been crafting stories as the notorious Mr. Michael Michaelmas and selling them for a meager wage to support her siblings. The only real way to ensure her family’s ruinous debts are paid, however, is to marry. Tall, thin, and plain, she has no expectation of success. In London for her first Season she seizes the chance to write the tale of a brooding duke. In her research, she finds Sebastian Fitzhugh, the 5th Duke of Mallen, who unfortunately is perfectly affable, charming, and so nicely… configured… he takes her breath away. He lacks all the character traits she needs for her story, but alas, any duke will have to do.

Sebastian Fitzhugh, the 5th Duke of Mallen has been deceived so many times during the high-stakes game of courtship, he’s lost faith in society women. Yet, after a chance encounter with Hermione, he finds himself intrigued. Not a woman he’d normally consider beautiful, the young lady’s practical bent, her forthright nature and her tendency to turn up in the oddest places has his interests… roused. He’d like to trust her, he’d like to do a whole lot more with her too, but should he?

MY REVIEW

5 STARS

*An ecopy of the book was graciously given by the author in exchange for an honest review*

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all of the Christi Caldwell books that I’ve read but I really have to say that this is one of her best, if not her best. I read the book with so much enthusiasm and it has kept me hooked since I started reading it. The familiarity I felt with the characters added up to the marvellous experience.

...he possessed the manner of beauty that made weak young ladies stammer and forget essential details such as their names and the importance of propriety.

Sebastian Fitzhugh, the fifth Duke of Mallen, was not in a hurry to find his future duchess. He was in search of a woman who saw him as a man rather than a title, a woman who would spark his own interest. Sebastian’s stern ducal quality was an interesting sight. But mixed with his quick wit, sentimental side, and that conflicting feeling he had towards Hermione, he was an absolute delight.

She vastly preferred the idea of having affections of a gentleman inspired by her mind.

Hermione Rogers had so many secrets. Secrets dangerous enough to remove her family from the respectable eye of the society. Although her family insisted she required a wealthy (if not titled) husband to stabilize their financial flux, she never expected herself to be the target of a duke’s interest. Hermione’s strength as a heroine was an admirable and fascinating character. She had her own share of insecurities and struggles but she battles with them with a stern determination and loving heart. The depth of this character and her family really got into me and I fell in love with her and her siblings.

He had nothing before her. His happiness, his sole reason for living was intrinsically tied to her happiness.

The contrast in Sebastian and Hermione’s character was really interesting. The spark between them escalated amusingly with the story. The exchange of conversations and the turn of events have successfully tickled the qualities I seek in a historical romance. For some reason, this story has an unspoken depth embedded within the paragraphs. A deeper emotion that enflamed every page of this book. I’ve read almost all of Christi Caldwell’s books but for some reason, this one carried a stronger and deep-seated love that got into me. This is definitely one of Miss Caldwell’s most precious masterpieces.
