In Legacy, Colorado, I buried my father alongside his elite Hotshot team.
Ten years later, I’ve followed in his footsteps—fighting fires in the mountains of Alaska with my brother.
Amid the flames, nothing ignites me like Avery Claire.
She’s stubborn, strong, sexy as hell, and my best friend.
She also has no idea that I’m in love with her.
But Colorado is calling me home, needing every Legacy-born firefighter to successfully rebuild our fathers’ team.
One night will change everything between us,
But she’s tied to Alaska and my future is in Colorado.
Now I’m torn between what my honor demands,
And what my heart can’t live without.

5/5 stars!

Rebecca Yarros is the queen of feels. I swear, this woman can make a cook book sound romantic. Whether her book is long or short, she always has me absolutely consumed and utterly satisfied. Ignite might be a short read but it’s definitely not something you can easily forget.

He consumed my every thought, until my only concerns were how close I could get and how much deeper I could kiss him.

River Maldonado has put off a number of fire in his life. But it seemed the fiery feelings he had for his best friend was an inextinguishable flame. Every fiber that made up River warmed my heart. His loyalty to his roots and his burning passion for his job and the people he loved brought out unique streaks in this book that are distinct and addictive.

“But I’m not free, no matter how pretty you make it sound.”

Avery always felt like she was stepping on the line between the harsh reality and a fairytale. She revels on the moments she gets as a dedicated sister and a loyal best friend. But now that she had a chance at a happily ever after, she couldn’t really imagine it without dragging her own realistic once-upon-a-time. Avery was cloaked with a courage that is so refreshingly poignant. She was so admirable when she strived, fought, and endured but her true beauty was best seen when she let go.

“You are my fairy tale,” I argued. “You are the only woman I have ever loved. The only woman I will ever love, and I’m not giving up that easily.”

The instant fire between River and Avery was wonderfully felt throughout the book. There was always this deeper heat and passion hovering above their friendship that kept me turning pages. That alone sustained my interest in the story. But looking in the wider perspective, there’s this warm, hospitable, and fun aura surrounding the characters and the setting that would make every reader feel like a part of them. A sneak peek at the other hotshots definitely upped my anticipation for this series! Ignite was a warm, satisfying and deeply romantic read with the right amount of drama and fun. It’s definitely a magnificent tease on how hot this series is going to get!

BOOK REVIEW: Sacred Hart by A.M. Johnson

Sleep, it was luxury I didn’t have.
I could hear it then, in the dark light of night, in the dusky morning…
The click of the trigger, the smell of her blood, the sound of the rain.
I never thought I would see her again.
She was a ghost.
She was dead.
When Maggie Wright pushed her way into my life, she brought the phantom with her, and I was helpless to her pull.
Everything I had, all of it, had been taken from me ten years ago. I had nothing but the shirt on my back, the memories that still burned through my veins, and the regret I drowned in every day.
I am Ryan Hartford...and I have nothing left to lose.

5/5 stars

I am addicted to the way Miss Amanda writes a book. Everything is palpable and every form of depth is felt. Sacred Hart started with a drowning feeling, and slowly, easily, marvelously, Miss Amanda roused me up from the flood of emotions this book has caused.

God, I wished I could pour half of my soul into his chest, give him that happiness he deserved, the love he’d once had, but I couldn’t.

Ryan Hart lost all his life’s value after he lost his daughter while his wife cheated on him. After paying for the cost of his vengeance, he found himself torn between finding a new purpose or succumbing to the loss completely. The complexity of Ryan’s character was almost overwhelming. The way he was so broken and yet so seemingly fine at the same time was something that caught my heart. He was a man who carried loss but kept a calm, loving, pure soul right beneath him. And man, unraveling Ryan was all kinds of swoon.

Maggie was like the needle of a compass. No matter how hard I tried to get lost inside myself, she pulled me north, up, toward the light… toward her.

Maggie Wright was blessed to have been able to keep the person she valued in her life—her daughter. She knew what it was like to trust and to lose, to love and be ripped open by loss. Now she didn’t know if she could afford another. Maggie and her little B was definitely a source of light in this book. As a Mom, she was a force to be reckoned with; careful, loving, selfless. A woman, she was fire that needed just a spark of Ryan Hart to enflame.

My heart… it was fierce enough for the both of us.

The thing I really loved about the book was that the weight wasn’t on the plot. Plot wise, it was actually light and very easy to get into. It was the characters’ depths that drove the story into a gripping intensity. Every character was real and palpable, and the way they connected with each other was so poignant and light at the same time. Page after page, this book just completely sucked me whole. I love the little heartbreaks and the heart-quenching meltdowns, the sobs and the shrieks, the indifference and the sensuality. Obviously, this book has driven me in contradicting ways that I absolutely loved! With the author’s addictive prose and the unique streaks in this book, Sacred Hart was a consuming read. It somehow showed that sometimes, when you drown in loss, you don’t fight until you get out of the waters. You just learn how to swim.

"The grip I felt at the end of Hook was successfully sustained when I started reading Burn. Then the door swung open and there he was. For a brief moment I was taken by his handsome features—his olive skin and pronounced jaw, the sparkle in his dark eyes, his perfect, straight nose. More than anything, it was the pull that remained between us that surprised me. Like I was a planet still circling his sun.

There was a moment when we locked eyes that the gravity of all that had happened wasn’t weighing heavy between us, and it almost caused me to stumble back.

Then, after the moment of intimacy had passed, I was sure I saw dread slip over his expression. I wasn’t going to stay put and find out though.

I wouldn’t be standing on his doorstep begging for whatever scraps of information he deemed worthy of casting my way. No, I was here to demand what he, at the very least, owed me, and I wouldn’t leave until he gave it to me.

“We need to talk.” I pushed past him, careful not to make contact, and bolted down the hallway toward the living room.

“Emily, this isn’t a good time.” Marco’s footsteps followed quickly behind me.

“I don’t care. Put aside whatever it is you’re doing. I want answers.”

I came to an abrupt stop when I stepped into the living/dining area and found Alexa sprawled across the couch like she was a feast ready to be enjoyed.

Her blouse was half unbuttoned, her legs draped over the cushions, causing her skirt to ride up a bit on her thighs, and her lips slightly swollen. Her lipstick had been rubbed off her mouth and onto her skin. She wore a saccharine smile that I wanted to rip off her face.
I crossed my arms over my chest and turned back to Marco. “Oh, I see. Well, pardon me for interrupting.” There was no disguising the venom in my voice.

His tortured gazed darted from me to her and back a few times before he schooled his features and responded. “Can we have this conversation some other time?” he asked, his voice neutral.

“Marco, who’s this?” Alexa purred from behind me.

I spun to address her with a fake smile on my face. “I’m Emily. We met at the art show a few months ago when I was there with Marco. Back when we were still fucking. You can call me Brandi, though.” I turned to lock gazes with him before finishing. “Everyone who knows me intimately does.”

His fists clenched at his sides and his jaw tightened. Good. Some small part of me was pleased that I was still able to elicit a reaction like that from him.

I swung my attention back to the blonde on the couch. “I’m sorry to swing by unannounced like this and interrupt what was obviously going to be a good time for you both. I just need a few minutes with Marco, and then I’ll be out of your hair.”

Alexa’s eyes narrowed on me for a moment, and though she was playing nice with me—probably for Marco’s benefit—it was clear she wasn’t pleased with the interruption.

“Perhaps I should go,” she said.

“No!” Marco said, whip fast. “Emily should be the one to leave.”
Not going to lie.

That stung.

A lot.

No matter that everything between Marco and I had been based on lies, the fact that I was so easily tossed aside smarted.

“I’m not going anywhere until we speak.” I leveled him with a gaze that told him I was serious.

“Why don’t you use my bathroom to freshen up, Alexa? It’s that way through my bedroom.” He pointed toward the room that we’d spent many a night in. “I’ll meet you there in a few minutes.”

A victorious smile crept across her face, and her gaze swung to me as she rose from the couch. She brushed her fingers across Marco’s chest as she passed him. “Don’t be too long.”

He nodded but didn’t spare her a glance as she passed, his gaze still fixed on me.

As soon as the bedroom door closed, I spoke. “Sorry to interrupt your play time, Marco, but you owe me some answers and I’m ready to collect.”

Chapter One

The idyllic countryside of Lainey Eversman’s new home left a lot to be desired when you were under attack by mutant country spiders. Four weeks ago she’d purchased ten lakeside acres in the lush mountains of North Carolina. Currently she was standing on a rickety kitchen chair swatting at a horde of massive spiders crawling through a crack in her cabin’s ceiling. All the while wishing desperately she’d never left the confines of city life.

She was trying admirably to not freak out like a total pansy, but when a shower of leggy spiders fell in her hair she gave up the fight. Giving a little squeak she launched herself from the old wooden chair and began to dance around like a lunatic while brushing her hands madly through her hair.

After a brief tussle with her own ego, she finally gave up and headed for a real shower. The kind with water and soap. No one had to know she’d nearly had a meltdown over a few spiders. Those ten acres, so happily purchased a few weeks ago, had come with a tiny hunting cabin. One room encompassing a very small and formerly very dirty shower, a toilet, a kitchen sink the size of her favorite pair of shoes, and a mini fridge fresh out of the box, all in a twelve-by-twelve room.

At the time it had seemed like the perfect place to hang tight while she had a place built. In retrospect she should have taken her brother and his girlfriend up on the offer to make use of their guest room until the build was completed. She loved both Cal and Molly, but she had little interest in finding them in compromising positions all over the apartment. Given the pair of them, it would be near impossible to catch them doing anything but getting frisky.

The creepy cabin in the middle of nowhere was her home for the duration. It wasn’t so bad, aside from the bugs, the smothering summer heat, and the incessant nature noise. No one ever told her living in the sticks was loud. Since her first week in the cabin she’d been serenaded nightly by an orchestra of bullfrogs, crickets, and assorted evening critters. Every morning the birds woke her at first light. Eventually she’d adjust to the nature sounds, but to date she’d been averaging about six hours a night; not really enough to feel rested. Altogether leaving her just a little bit cranky from lack of sleep.

In theory living alone surrounded by nature was an amazing retreat, but in reality it was quite the adjustment for a city girl leaping into the next stage of her life.

After scrubbing all the spider particles from every square inch of her body she exited the shower and tossed on a pair of simple cotton panties and the thinnest tank top she could find. It was a beautiful August evening, but the heat of the day hadn’t dissipated enough to leave Lainey comfortable. The heat and humidity left her feeling sticky the moment she toweled off from the shower.

Being a half-mile down a winding lane in the middle of nowhere had its perks. Sitting on her miniscule porch in her underwear with her feet propped up was definitely one of them.

Well, until she saw a car’s lights turn off the main road and make its way toward the cabin. It could only be a handful of people. Her brother Cal, Cal’s girlfriend Molly, or more likely Chris. Chris the hottie architect that she’d met through Cal and Molly, who was contracted to redesign the coffee shop she’d purchased.

Given the light glow of a near full moon, Lainey guessed it to be nearly ten. Rather late for a business meeting. Finally, she determined it was Chris, as his sleek black car eased slowly closer until it was nearly ready to park next to her own car on the far side of the porch. Lost in her own thoughts, she was about to greet the hottie architect in her panties.

Dammit.

Launching herself to her feet in an effort to reach the front door of the cabin before Chris cleared the porch was easier said than done. In her rush she almost crushed a cricket with a poorly placed foot. Attempting to save the cricket’s life, Lainey lurched to the left and managed to trip over her own feet. Landing in an inelegant pile, she watched the cricket hop away unharmed.

As she was attempting to right herself Chris stepped into view and halted his progress at the foot of the porch.

Dragging myself out of the gymnasium and down the hall, I try and get to the side double-doors. But with no one here to help me, it's difficult. I need to sit for a moment out on the steps leading to the back field and gather myself.

My legs become heavier as I get to the doors. The cyclone happening inside my head is growing thicker while my vision is so unclear I can barely make out any objects.

Stumbling down the first step, I barely recognize where I am.

“What’s happening?” I think I say.

There’s a cacophony of dense sounds; a combination of white noise, mumbling, and a beat which doesn’t make sense.

My eyes are now so heavy I can barely open them and my legs are completely weighted as I attempt to make my way down the stairs. I think I’m going to pass out.

5/5 stars!

After reading Hook, I experienced one of the greatest cliffy hangover I’ve ever had. I felt like I was going to be free-falling, unsure of what to feel, until I’ve read Burn . And when I did, man, was I blown away! Elisabeth Grace shredded this story with an all-out angsty, suspenseful fill that had me on the tip of my toes!

“Amore mio, some rocks turn to dust under pressure. You have transformed into a diamond.”

A mother bereft of a son is like an angel bereft of her goodness. If Emily did everything to keep her son alive, now, Brandi would make sure everything who touched him will burn. It was both heartbreaking and epic to watch Emily strut with revenge. There were hard-to-read scenes in the book that made it essentially poignant. Emily’s pain and selfless love were both palpable, driving the already angst-filled plot with a more gripping streak. I loved this woman’s courage.

“You don’t hate me, tesoro. You hate the fact that you still want me, and I’m going to prove it to you.”

The only way to break Marco was to break the family he’s come to love. And to see them wither in their own way killed the remaining compassion he had in his heart. He played the pawn before, now he will unleash a beast they will never forget. It was amazing how felt Marco’s tenderness (and hotness) was even when he was seeking for vengeance. Even when he wanted to avenge, there was a distinct part of him that gave off his good heart. And that marvelous mix of sturdy, dependable alpha, and affectionate, loyal man was utterly consuming.

“Sei diventata il mio mondo.”“You became my entire world.”

The grip I felt at the end of Hook was successfully sustained when I started reading Burn. The intense run of Elisabeth Grace’s words seeped right into my skin, making every scene so raw and fully felt. There were scenes that are so hard to read but those just really added to the unique experience this book brought. It was suspenseful, raw, angsty, emotional, and genuine all at the same time! Burn was a consuming read; a break from the ideally-driven romantic suspense, but a bone-deep romance all the same.

Jake Roberson is nothing but a lying bastard. Every whisper that falls from his lips is a betrayal, but I can’t seem to convince myself to walk away. When he comes sauntering toward me, all those particulars go right out the window, and I cave. Every. Single. Time.

No more, though. I can’t. There’s too much at stake this time around, and I won’t have it.

Besides, one night with Beau, that’s all it took. I’m sunk. He was amazing in every way imaginable, and he still is. Why he likes someone like me, I can’t fathom. He’s such a good man, and he only ever sees the best in people, me included. It’s an amazing thing. The way he looks at the world, it’s like magic. Every bone, every muscle, every fiber of Beau Reed’s being is good, and he never stops proving that to me. He’s a good guy deep down in his core where it counts. I’ve always known that, even when I first met him. It’s something that radiates out from him like this big glowing light. Never have I ever met anyone like him.

But because he’s good, I have to make him go. ~Shelby

I can’t focus on anything else:
Soft, brown hair hanging in waves down to creamy skin that looks all too damned touchable.
Big eyes that could never be described with any justice, brown to green, maybe hazel, with so much vibrant light, etching them forever into memory.
Plump, smooth, kissable lips that are the stuff of fantasy, with the bottom one slightly fuller than the top, perfect.
Shelby.

It’s always Shelby, always been Shelby, and there doesn’t seem to be anything or anyone that can make that any different.

Except, now, there’s more at play than just her. For once, it’s not about Shelby Case, and despite my best efforts to save her, there’s things that I can’t rescue her from. ~Beau

NOTE: No Offense, Darlin’ is the first Like A Lady novel. While it could be read as a standalone, for the full effect of Beau and Shelby’s backstory, the Like A Lady serial should be read as a prequel to this novel. The first part of the serial, Big Girl Panties, is free.

Chapter One: Beau

"If the heat hangs on any longer, I'm gonna move to Colorado," I tell Preston. "I'm done with it."

"Hell, it's only the first of October. We got a couple more weeks of the heat, man, and you know it. Best get used to it."

"Somethin' hasta give."

"Listen, you're actin' like a lil'-"

My radio goes off, scaring the daylights out of us both. Laughing, I turn the loud buzzing down a bit and listen to the dispatcher calling for me over at the bar. Of course, it's for me. It couldn't be the fire guys. Getting up from my seat, I groan, wanting to cuss, but I've been workin' on that shi- stuff. I've been watching what I say because, now I have a little niece toddling around repeating everything, my mom is gonna end up beating my backside if I don't. One tiny shit or hell slips off her sweet lips, and we'll all get our mouths washed out with lye soap.

"I guess I gotta go," I tell him, grabbing my takeout cup and cookies off the table between us. "I'll talk to you tomorrow. Nothin' good ever happens on college night out at Rowdy's."

"Alright. Let me know about fishing in the morning. I won't wait around forever."

Shaking my head, because I know he'll wait as long as I dam- dang well please, I head out of Subway, with a groan for all the stupid people in this town. The only thing to do around here on a weekend night is go to the bar or party in a pasture. We don't have a theater or bowling alley in town. Heck, we barely have a restaurant that stays open past nine. Thursdays start the weekend early, offering up dollar beer to the college kids. It wouldn't be so bad except all the rednecks around this place, including my brother Carl, act like idiots, thinking they are twenty-one, again. They can't handle their beer, dang sure not their liquor, and it ends up in a huge, messy brawl. The whole thing is like clockwork, every single weekend.

The Tahoe is parked right out in front of the restaurant for ease of access, not that much occurs around Freemont except traffic violations, the occasional wreck, and domestics. Getting inside, I buckle up before flipping on the lights. The blue and reds light up the night, and several high school kids get into their vehicles. Instead of racing out to Rowdy's, I take my time, careful of all the sixteen year olds. They've been loitering about since before I got here for dinner. It’s not a school night, thanks to the county-wide teacher's meeting tomorrow, but it's the least of my issues, apparently. They know better, though, because the owner is gonna complain about it on Monday, and then, I'll be forced to give them grief next weekend.

Same ole thing, different day.

Calling in to Liz, I laugh when she sighs, dramatically. "What's goin' on out there, tonight?" I ask.

"I'm not real sure. Domestic disturbance of some kind," she tells me, boredom soaking her every word. "I figure some drunk asshole beat up his old lady."

"I'm bettin' bar fight over a pretty girl. What are we wagering?"

"Ten bucks. I'm broke 'til payday."

"What the heck is the city payin' you? I'm broke, like livin' on some dang noodles broke, and here you are wagering ten? Five."

"Fine. Five it is, but you're doing this cause you know I'm going to win."

"We'll see," I laugh. Pulling into the rough parking lot, I park up front, watching as people scatter to the four corners. "I'm here, now. Talk to ya in a bit."

"Be safe," she tells me, as always.

"Ten-four."

She says it like I'm not always safe. I mean, when have I ever given anyone the idea I wouldn't be a hundred and ten percent, vest-wearing careful? I'm always careful. Well, most of the time, I'm careful. Sometimes.

Getting out of the car, I slam the door. The owner, Jeff, comes running over to me before I can even take a step in his direction. All six foot, three hundred pounds of him is barreling toward me at a speed I wasn't sure he possessed, and quite honestly, I'm scared for my freaking life. I take a step back, just in case, but he stops short, waving for me to follow him toward the bar's front door.

"What's goin' on, tonight?" I ask.

He shakes his head. "I don't know what got into the fool girl's head. I tell ya, she's off her rocker, Beau. Don't know what she was thinking, bringing trouble like this around here."

Ahh, there's always a girl, usually a sorta pretty one. Why is it always over a dang girl? Men do the stupidest sh- stuff over them. It's something that's hard wired into us, imbedded inside our DNA.

"Slow down. What exactly happened?"

Roger, a regular out here, holds the door open for Jeff and me. We both walk in like we own the place, and looking around, I don't see anything out of the ordinary. The lights are still mostly in place in their ancient fixtures, the bar stools are intact, and there doesn't seem to be any broken glass or pool sticks. I worked the Halloween Brawl. It occurred my first week on the PD and was some scary sh- stuff. It was bad, real bad, but this...well, it doesn't look like that at all. Inside Rowdy's, it looks like an extremely slow night, but Jeff doesn't stop inside. He walks straight through the bar, down the hall by his office, and out the back. I follow along, thoroughly confused.

"She's out here, Beau. I dunno what you are gonna do about it."

"What the he-"

There's no need to finish the sentence. I know exactly what he's talking about, and suddenly, I wish it were Mike, Cliff, Jared, or anyone's night to work this except mine. Why did it hafta be me?

"What's going on out here?" I ask, directing my question to Jake Roberson. "Jeff says we have a problem."

"Damn right we have a problem, Beau! Goddamn!" he yells back. He’s pacing back and forth, as if there’s too much energy inside him to be contained. "The stupid cunt is out of her damned head! What the hell was she thinking? She took a fucking baseball bat to my brand new truck! My brand new truck! You have to do something. Haul her ass in!"

Now, here's the story. I don't like Jake Roberson, not even a little bit, not at all. The way I see it, he's screwed over one too many people in his two decades on this planet, and I figure he deserves about anything he gets. Even as a kid, he was a brat. Spoiled to the core. I've never known him to have a bit of niceness in his body. His parents have raised him to feel entitled, but best I can tell, there's nothing all too special about him. He's a lazy son of a bi- jerk, lives off his daddy's money, and has managed to skate through life on his family name.

"Now, slow down. What are we talkin’ about?"

"You might as well go ahead and arrest me, take me to a cell. There's no arguing with the high and mighty Roberson family."

Jake jumps toward the soft voice behind me, lunging. His buddy Grayson pulls him back by his shirttail. He's yelling at him to keep his cool, telling him he needs to keep his nose clean, but Jake is pissed and it shows. Turning, I look into the semi-darkness behind me, hunting for the face I know is there. The poor lighting hides a beautiful set of hazel eyes, but the face is there, looking good and furious. It's like she's daring me to take her up on her words.

She should know I never back down from a challenge.
