BOOK REVIEW: The Rancher and the Rockstar by Lizbeth Selvig

SYNOPSIS

To the world, Gray Covey is a rock superstar. But to his runaway son, he’s simply the father who never has any time for him. To prove that he’s more than his rock star lifestyle, for the next few weeks Gray must put aside his fame and become...a farmhand?

Abby Stadtler has built the perfect, quiet life for herself. Neat and orderly is the name of the game for her and her beloved farm. When Gray shows up on her doorstep, looking like he stepped straight off the front cover of a magazine, she is determined that he won’t upset her routine.

But what neither counts on is the love that springs up between them. Abby knows that life on a ranch in Minnesota can never compete with an exciting world tour. But for Gray, it’s time to decide what’s really important. With Abby’s help, will he be able to decide, once and for all, that love and family are the answer?

MY REVIEW

4 STARS

This is the first time I’ve read a Lizbeth Selvig book and it was a treat! The story was a sweet and light read that will bring readers into a heart-warming journey of love and life. I loved that it wasn’t just focused on the romance but rather the characters themselves. Every character was given their own light of importance and I was totally entranced by the plot.

...he shared too many traits with a fantasy Prince Charming she’d created long ago. She couldn’t afford fantasies, much less a living, breathing reality.

Gray Covey struggled with getting his sixteen-year-old son in place. Although he was a rockstar loved by the rest of the world, Dawson, Gray’s son, didn’t empathize with them. I loved the equality of “genuine” and “rough” in Gray’s character. He was 45 years old but possessed the steam, tenderness, maturity, and appeal of a perfect romance hero. I wasn’t expecting to dig his character so much but I did and I love every aspect of him.

She was full of magic one moment, matter-of-fact the next.

Abby Stadtler was a realistically delightful character. She’s a single mother who works hard to keep her and her daughter’s life steady. She’s a pro at handling complicated situations and battles through life with strong faith and patience. Abby was a really inspiring character, mirroring the strong and independent women in the world. I love how soft and loving she was but also adored the times that showed how strong she was a mother and as a woman. She’s yet again another character that surprised me. She made me think she was clichéd but she turned out to be so unique in an Abby Stadtler kind of way.

“I can love you like an obsessed man...”

Most romance readers would think a love story needs a high level of steam between the main characters for the story to be a success romance. This book proved it wrong. Although there was a tug of attraction between Gray and Abby at the beginning of the story, the author did not exaggerate. What they had was an honest and real attraction rather than an overemphasized, sexual one. I loved that the author did not rush Gray and Abby’s love for each other. The attraction between them intensified along with the well-developed plot. With the author's careful and thorough writing prose, this sweet and inspirational read will take you into a journey of love and life—every aspect of it.
