Joshua Miles has spent his early twenties spinning his wheels. Working dead-end jobs and living at home has left him exhausted and uninspired, with little energy to pursue his passion for graphic art. Until he meets Gemma Henare, a vivacious out-of-towner from New Zealand. What begins as a one-night stand soon becomes a turning point for Josh. He can't get Gemma out of his head, even after she has left for home, and finds himself throwing caution to the wind for the first time in his life.

It's not long before Josh is headed to New Zealand with only a backpack, some cash, and Gemma's name to go on. But when he finally tracks her down, he finds his adventure is only just beginning. Equally infatuated, Gemma leads him on a whirlwind tour across the beautiful country, opening Josh up to life, lust, love, and all the messy heartache in between. Because, when love drags you somewhere, it might never let go even when you know you have to say goodbye.

Karina Halle is not just a writer. She’s a poignant artist. Every brush of her words had a life and a soul that seared a permanent mark in my life. From Love, in English to Love, in Spanish , and now Where Sea Meets Sky , Miss Halle managed to make me experience things that are way beyond what I expected from a romance story. She brought me into countries, cultures, dreams, and people who held doubts and goals that reminded me of my own.

He’s not permanent. He’s like the wind. He’ll be with me long enough to ruffle my feathers and then he’ll be gone.

Josh Miles held so many dreams but his reality was too real to even allow him to fly. With a low-paying job he wasn’t passionate about and a family drifting apart, he no longer had the determination to pursue his passion. Josh was a beautiful contrast. He held the courage, patience, and understanding of a man who loved sincerely yet shared his own weight of doubt and uncertainty. I loved being with him when he took risks, broke with him when his feelings weren’t reciprocated, and fell in love with him over and over again. I loved every bit of the things he does and feels for the girl who was once his inspiration and later became his life’s greatest passion.

I love her battered little soul and artist’s heart stuck in the body of a warrior.

Gemma Henare was broken by the loss of her dreams and had been around the world in hope to piece herself back together. She craved security and avoided attachments in fear of losing more. Gemma was a heartbreaking mystery. There were many times in the book where I wanted to shake the sense out of her but there were also moments when I just want to hold her and piece her back together. I loved Gemma’s free soul and her sense of adventure. But I wish her courage to travel into different parts of the world extended to her capability to open herself up.

We’re so undefined, so fleeting and fragile and new, but I don’t think he could belong to anyone else, and I couldn’t belong to anyone else but him.

I love the little heartbreaks this book has given me. The uncertainty between Gemma and Josh was a fluctuating feeling of lust and love that actually had me flipping pages in anticipation of what’s to come between them. I love the characters but I felt like there could’ve been more into them, they could’ve been deeper than they already are. I just felt like they were half-baked and was not given the chance of full potential.

Miss Halle is an amazing story-teller. She has a writing prose that could place a reader exactly where the characters are, making the story more moving and heartfelt. Her words are affective, poignant, and breath-taking. She proves this again by successfully activating my long-dead lust for travelling with WSMS. I fell in love with New Zealand by reading this book.

With regards to the story, I loved it but I did feel slight tinge of dissatisfaction after I’ve read it. Gemma and Josh had a strong connection and a blazing love but I felt like they could be more. Nevertheless, this book is still a must-read. It opened my eyes into many things and made me experience love and New Zealand in one spell-binding read.

Will you destroy something before you have a chance to lose it?
