Kensington Worth had a vision for her senior year. It involved her best friends, her posh private school in downtown Chicago and time alone with her piano until her audition was perfected, a guaranteed ticket into the best music programs in the world.

Instead, a nightmare took over.

It didn’t happen all at once, but her life unraveled quickly—a tiny thread that evil somehow kept pulling until everything precious was taken from her. She was suddenly living miles away from her old life, trapped in an existence she didn’t choose—one determined to destroy her from the inside, leaving only hate and anger behind. It didn’t help that her neighbor, the one whose eyes held danger, was enjoying every second of her fall.

Owen Harper was trouble, his heart wild and his past the kind that’s spoken about in whispers. And somehow, his path was always intertwined with Kensington’s, every interaction crushing her, ruining her hope for any future better than her now. Sometimes, though, what everyone warns is trouble, is exactly what the heart needs. Owen Harper was consumed with darkness, and it held onto his soul for years. When Kensington looked at him, she saw a boy who’d gotten good at taking others down when they threatened his carefully balanced life. But the more she looked, the more she saw other things too—good things…things to admire.

Things…to love. Things that made her want to be reckless.

And those things…they were the scariest of all.

4.5-5 STARS

This is the first Ginger Scott book I’ve ever read and my, I have to really say that I thank whatever force brought me the chance of reading her work. I loved every bit of heartbreak and every speck of love this book has brought me. Ginger Scott captured my taste in a book, a story written in raw honesty and characters so real that they’ll claw your heart out.

Since the moment my eyes met Owen Harper’s, he has owned me, terrified me, consumed me, and I don’t even remember the girl I was before him anymore.

Owen Harper wasn’t a perfect hero. And that’s the main reason why I loved him. The depth of his personality lay within the misunderstood facts of his life. The responsible, smart, and loving man that he really was, was covered with the dark misconceptions of people on his family. The way the writer revealed Owen’s character was heartbreaking. It was honest, real, and absolutely heart-stealing. Ginger Scott first showed how people looked at the boy Owen Harper and then delved into the man he really was.

If I am somehow this exception to the Owen Harper rule, I’m going to appreciate the role, cherish it, and cling to it.

Kensington Worth was the new girl in town. She didn’t know a lot about the place and the people except that it was a new nightmare she had to face. But she really didn’t know that amidst the nightmare she was living in was the dream she had always wanted. Kens was a really beautiful mix of talent, beauty, intellect, depth, and strength. She’s this kind of girl who looked beyond what she saw and delve to understand deeper. She possessed the kind of strength and social support Owen needed and throughout the book, she has surprised me more than I expected. With her wit, her charm, her stand, her heart, and most especially her capability to love and understand.

“I love you, and I’m not afraid to love you,”

I don’t even know what words to use to accurately describe how this story clawed my heart out and how I graciously succumb to this beautiful heartbreak. This romantic story between Owen and Kensi tackled more than sweet kisses and true love. Ginger Scott dared to be blunt, honest, and real. She perfectly mixed the young adult idealism with the harsh reality of the world. She made me fall in love with the kind of people we misjudge in real life, channelling important messages in mental health, understanding, and prejudice.

I loved the element of surprise and unpredictability of this book. It has the kind of characters that will rack on your brain when you stop reading the story. Owen and Kensi’s love wasn’t easy. But the complications of their relationship made their story poignant and beautiful. Ginger Scott has definitely captured me with this one. The story was surprising yet refreshing, painful but real, and sad but so utterly beautiful.
