BOOK REVIEW: The Lie by Karina Halle

Title: The Lie
Author: Karina Halle
Release Date: February 15, 2016

Blurb

Their love led to a lie
Their truth led to the end

Brigs McGregor is crawling out from the ashes. After losing his wife and son in a car accident and his job from his subsequent downward spiral, he's finally moving forward, getting a prestigious teaching position at the University of London and a new life in the city. Slowly, but surely, he's pushing past the guilt and putting his tragic past behind him.

Until he sees her.

Natasha Trudeau once loved a man so much she thought she'd die without him. But their love was wrong, doomed from the start, and when their world crashed around them, Natasha was nearly buried in the rubble. It took years of moving on to forget him, and now that she's in London, she's ready to start again.

Until she sees him.

Because some loves are too dangerous to ever indulge.
And some loves are far too powerful to ignore.
Their love just might be the life and the death of them.

My Review
5/5 stars

"The human heart isn't meant to be caged by someone who doesn't feed it."

Perfection. This book is perfection amidst a broken, forbidden, poignantly imperfect story between two people who chose to risk falling in love with each other. I've never cried so much in a book before, never felt sooo much in a book before. Karina Halle just continuously proves that she writes magic. The Lie is an intensely emotional read that goes deeper than just a book. It was a heartbreakingly magical experience.

Brigs McGregor.
The love of my life.
The love that ruined lives.

Brigs McGregor lost a huge part of himself the night his wife and son died. But a spark of hope remained in his heart that someday, he could live again. Brigs is probably one of the very few heroes who seared deep in my heart. His pain, his depth, his grief, his love, his hope, his heart, God, there is nothing not to love about this man. Brigs was such a great man who just happened to find true love outside of his unhappy marriage and acted upon it in hopes of finding real happiness. The consequences of that love killed him but the same love brought him back to life.

My precious truth, that I love her too, would only do more harm than good.

Natasha Trudeau loved one man and he was married. The consequence of that love ruined her. My heart broke a number of times for Natasha in this book but there were more times when I just stood up and applauded her strength. She was an intelligent woman with a courage of a warrior and a heart of an angel. Although she was left vulnerable a number of times, she held herself high and kept moving.

We are forever surrounded by ashes.
But we are fire.
And fire rises.

I applaud Karina Halle for taking the leap and writing this story. The plot is a controversial topic but she drove the story with a masterful prose that made it more poignant and eye-opening. Setting aside the depth and poignancy of the story, I also reveled upon the little, unexpected sparks of humor and wit in the story. Her characters are just always rich and remarkable! I loved seeing Kyla and Lachlan there, too.

Brigs and Natasha's chemistry set the pages of this book on fire. Their kind of love created a deeper and more heart-felt sensation in every scene. I was consumed, ruined, repaired, and satisfied. The Lie is definitely of Karina Halle's best works to date.
